Editorial Review
Breaking Bad follows 50-year-old protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), who learns he has inoperable lung cancer and vouches to provide for his family by turning to a life of crime.
In the pilot episode, White is shuffling through existence as an unappreciated high-school chemistry teacher who also works part-time at a car wash. Keeping the news of his cancer and impending death from his loving wife Skyler (Anna Gunn) and handicapped teenage son Walter Jr (RJ Mitte), he despondently embarks upon becoming a kingpin of the drug trade. Partnering by chance with ex-students and established drug dealer Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), White sets about creating the finest crystal meth on the market.
The stars of popular and long-running sitcoms often become pigeon-holed as a particular character, but Cranston - who previously starred as the eccentric father Hal in Malcolm in the Middle - is simply brilliant. He harnesses perfectly White's brittle, maniac state of mind while evoking the right amount of sympathy.
This no-nonsense black comedy is the latest outstanding series to screen on Showcase, which continues to maintain its impressive line-up.
Breaking Bad premieres on Showcase on Thursday, August 28, at 8:30pm.
